The legend Hatteras begins on the islands of the North Carolina shore, where the cold waters cross the warm currents of the Gulf. The home of Atlantic sea storms.
Here in 1959 in Cape Hatteras, where the winds blow fiercely and hurricanes, are on the agenda, Willis Slane studied the construction of a boat to win the Diamond Shoals. Would not be a normal boat-No wooden fishing boat traditional could do this. This new boat had to be robust to withstand shock wave of water to Hatteras.
But the most important thing would be a great sport fishing boat-large enough to handle a group of fishermen and quite handy while browsing.
Breaking with all tradition, Slane chose a new material-glass fiber-to build its first Charter.
Hatteras has produced its first yacht angling the March 22, 1960, the city of High Point, North Carolina. Baptized on Knit Wits, was a 41-foot sportfisherman with a double cabin. The response was enthusiastic, and from these first steps, was born the legend Hatteras.
In a testimony to the robustness? The Wits Knit is still in service today, after a career that includes the service in the Gulf of Mexico and Pinas Bay, Panama.
Two years after the 41 with a double cabin, the first fiberglass market. Thirty years later, the original structure was closed and all production was consolidated at 95-acre waterfront in New Bern, where operations remain today.
However, some things have not changed to Hatteras. Hatteras yachts continue to define the standard for durability and high performance in all waters. Hatteras builds all his boats with a solid fiberglass hull, and only guarantees Hatteras its hull for five years-testimony to the robustness of its boats.
